If you notice any of these signs, it is likely that you need garage spring replacement:
- Motor running but door not opening
- Difficulty opening door manually
- Gunshot-like sound from garage
- Garage door suddenly crashing closed
- Visible gaps between spring coils
When you look at your torsion spring, you may notice a space or spaces between the coils. This is a tell-tale sign that the coils are no longer under the pressure of the door, meaning that the spring won’t be able to do its job. You may find yourself stuck outside your garage or with your vehicle stuck inside. This can be a major inconvenience.
Though the problem generally can’t get any worse once the spring is broken, you should still call your garage door technician right away. Residential garage spring replacement is definitely not something you should attempt to do yourself. Although the process is relatively straightforward and won’t take your garage door technician more than an hour or two, it does come with a fairly high level of injury risk.
In order to work properly, torsion springs need to be under extremely high levels of pressure. If you don’t know exactly what you are doing when installing a new spring, you run the risk of it snapping out of place. If you happen to be in the pathway of a snapping spring, you could get seriously injured, so it is best to leave it to the professionals.
